Josephine Baker House Renovation
About
Assignment Details: A hand-drawn project for my introductory architecture studio, I was assigned to make a meaning intervention to Adolf Loos’ rather strange and revealing house that he obsessively designed for Josephine Baker.
Project Narrative and Organization: While Loos created a pool so that guests could creepily watch Baker swim in her home, I concluded that as the world’s most famous dancer, Baker might want to revolutionize dance as an artform by removing the constraint of gravity. Thus, I created underwater viewing tunnels from which guests can witness Baker dance in an experimental theater free from gravitational restriction. A walkway was also added on the exterior for viewing that serves as a ramp and a rotated marquee, reflecting the inversion of dance occurring in the immersive theatrical space.
