Parthenon Twister
2025
Materials: Foam, masonite, acrylic paint
Dimensions: 80in x 42in x 24in (hung at 54in)
Piece invites viewer to become column in the classical architecture entablature and pediment by placing head into evenly spaced holes in the structure
Only structural elements of body visible on the exterior
Interactors break strict proportions and grid of colonnade through the familiar game of Twister
Spinners inside structure and board placed below help signal to guests the game of Twister
Relief sculpture usually placed on outside now inside for interactors to perceive
Outside viewers can place face into cutout (similar to an amusement park face cutout) and become unknowingly part of the interior relief sculpture
Interactivity calls to the agency within a theme park where one’s actions physically influence the visual landscape of the world around them
My deepest thank you to Jules Martin for shooting and editing these photos and to Martha Freidman and Kyung Lee for appearing in the photos
