Submarine
2024 - Individual Project
Materials: wood, plywood, masonite, cardboard
Dimensions: 8ft x 6ft x 12ft
Human-scale, inhabitable tunnel book, created for an artist book assignment
Created in the likeness of an extruded submarine window
Rests closed (20in thick) and invites viewers to open the tunnel book (to 12ft deep) and walk through each page the extruded submarine window
Viewers begin in the outside, unknown ocean before embarking on a journey climbing through the pages into the book, where they become embedded into the book
After traversing the final page and symbolically stepping through common childhood symbol of the picture book, one is invited to step into a cardboard box that calls to the familiar childhood imaginative fort where one is severed from outside view
In the box and out of sight of the world’s judgmental eye, one can play freely and walk through the box to a viewing area where they can view those on the outside who chose not to play
One then must journey back out of the book into the ocean and take these lessons of play into the real world
Huge thank you to Charlotte Pfenning for providing the painting framed at the end of the book!
